"The way [President Obama speaks] to the American people has made me want to become involved. I have never been a political 'junkie' and don't always understand the intricate details of the legislative process, but I do understand that this issue in Congress surrounding the budget and potential default requires my action."President Obama has called the American people to action and I have answered that call. Let's see if my Washington representation will do the same . . ."-Sonja
If you follow @BarackObama on Twitter, you've probably noticed that our feed has been on the busy side today. We've been posting the Twitter handles of every Republican lawmaker-senators and representatives-and asking folks to tweet at them to urge a bipartisan resolution to the debt crisis.
We need to keep it up until we have a deal, so we've created a directory of members of Congress on Twitter. Find your legislator in the list below and tweet at them to let them know it's time to come to a compromise and get this thing done.
At a volunteer leadership conference at the start of this summer, I was asked to describe what my neighborhood team looked like. I looked around me to see other people creating perfect diagrams of their team structure, and I felt a little panicky. I didn’t really know what the structure of my team was. “Well,” I thought to myself, “I think I know who my team leader is…”
Throughout the summer, I helped to build up my team, Northwest Fort Collins. I had individual meetings with supporters, made phone calls, hosted events, and registered voters. I listened to volunteers and tried to find the best place for them on our team. I had meetings with our team leader in which we discussed the future of the team and thought about how to best get new people involved. I had days when I exceeded my goals and felt like I was truly making a change in the world, and I had days when I felt like I was accomplishing absolutely nothing.
I plan to continue as a team member for the Northwest team, but last Tuesday was my final phone bank with the team as a summer organizer. As we sat around preparing for the phone bank and talking about what the phone calls would look like for the night, more and more volunteers walked through the door. Some of the faces were familiar, belonging to team members that have been with us from the very start. Other faces were new to me and were there to support us for the very first time.
Tuesday night made me realize that I will never have a perfectly structured team. Teams are dynamic, shifting groups of people. Sometimes people get sick and can’t enter data, or they are busy with their kid’s softball game and can’t come to one of our meetings. However, if everyone contributes what they can, we can work together to make a change in our country. Being an organizer has its frustrations and challenges, without a doubt, but when you get to know people and form relationships that can change the world, organizing is completely worth all of the frustrations.
As the Summer Organizer Program comes to an end, we're looking for a new team of fall fellows to build on the hard work of organizers like Caitlin. If you or someone you know would be an awesome organizer, apply here and be sure to spread word of this opportunity to your friends.

At a press conference this morning, President Obama urged voters to keep up the pressure on Congress to find a bipartisan compromise in the debt ceiling debate:
“[O]n Monday night, I asked the American people to make their voice heard in this debate, and the response was overwhelming. So please, to all the American people, keep it up. If you want to see a bipartisan compromise-a bill that can pass both houses of Congress and that I can sign-let your members of Congress know. Make a phone call. Send an email. Tweet. Keep the pressure on Washington, and we can get past this.”
If you live in a Republican district, be sure to call your representative at 202-224-3121. Then let us know how it went by filling out a call report form.
Sadly, my time as a summer organizer is drawing to a close. Between the skills I’ve honed, the experiences I’ll never forget, and the friendships that I’ve made, I can’t think of any better way to have spent my summer.
Of the countless things I’ve learned, I can say that the most important thing is that your success depends on how you treat the people you interact with. Life is a series of social interactions and requires that you value others and their support in order to be successful. Volunteers and supporters are no different from friends and family. Being respectful and understanding will always yield positive results because, in the end, people are people.
One of my favorite moments this summer came during a voter registration event I held during our “Cali Invasion” weekend; when supporters and organizers joined us from neighboring California. Not only did I have a successful day registering voters and gathering “I’m In” cards, but I was able to meet and talk to organizers just like me. That day showed me that this organization is so much bigger than myself. I’m only one of thousands of people at the heart of this remarkable campaign.
During the last presidential election, I was an intern for a field organizer. I saw how hard she worked and thought I knew what to expect when my turn came. Now, having had a taste of it this summer and understanding the organization and the professionalism required of me, I have even more respect for her and what she achieved, and for what community organizers do.
In the next few weeks I’ll be moving back to New York for college. The skills that I’ve honed as a summer organizer will be so helpful, not only with my school work, but with interactions I have with professors and classmates. I will no longer be scared to approach my professors during office hours because it’ll be just like any one-on-one meeting I’ve had this summer. I'm going to carry this experience and these lessons with me, wherever I go.
And for anyone who’s applying to be a fall fellow, I can tell you one thing-do it. You won’t regret it.
President Obama will make a statement on the debt ceiling at 10:20 am ET. Watch live: http://wh.gov/live
We first checked in with Garrett Arwa, Michigan state director, back in April as this campaign was first launching. Three months in, we wanted to hear how things are going.
The support we’re seeing from people here in Michigan is very encouraging, and the work our summer organizers have done is just phenomenal.
Michigan has had a tough few years-there was a recession here even before 2008's financial crisis. But the policies that the President has put in place-his investment in the auto industry and support for green jobs-are really helping the state get back on its feet.
This summer, our big focus has been registering voters, and our team of summer organizers have really done an outstanding job to help do it. They’ve been inquisitive, inventive and, above all, hard-working. We have a motto here-“leave no vote behind”-and the summer organizers have taken that to heart, registering voters from bus stops in Grand Rapids to gas stations in Detroit.
And it’s not just the summer organizers who have been busy registering voters and bringing new people into the campaign. Each time we’ve had aDay of Action, more and more folks have turned out to help.
One of our top volunteers, Ann, has recruited over 500 new supporters. She’s been reaching out to her friends and family, to people in her community, and to folks at her church and at work.
Something that's struck me over the last few months is that wherever we go, people appreciate that we're reaching out to them to get involved and value our willingness to sit down and hear their ideas and concerns. Folks have also said they like knowing that what they're telling us is getting fed into our larger strategy to help shape the campaign. Even when people we talk to aren't quite ready to jump in with both feet, they're glad to see us being active and making a difference in our communities.
Over the next few months, new fall fellows will pick up where the summer organizers leave off-registering voters, bringing in new supporters, and growing this campaign. And everything else we accomplish is up to you. Sign up to become a volunteer or find an event near you, and you can be sure that your local organizer will call you and help find the best way for you to get involved.
